Purposeful Connection: Building Cross Collaboration Between DV and DD Providers

Project Summary:
The goal is to increase the capacity of DD providers working with survivors/victims of domestic violence and to increase capacity for Domestic Violence (DV) and Sexual Violence (SV) providers working with survivors who have DD. NYS OPDV will work with an independent consultant to conduct “Learning Sessions”. During these sessions they will speak with individuals with DD, families, and providers about gender-based violence and the impact for those with DD. Using the knowledge gained in these sessions as well as literature review, OPDV will develop a comprehensive training on identifying and supporting people with DD who have experienced or are still experiencing abuse. This training will be for both DD provider agencies as well as DV and SV provider agencies. In addition, during these trainings, providers will be able to meet and make cross-system connections. Furthermore, OPDV will work with DD providers to map out their intake process. Using what they’ve learned OPDV will make recommendations on ways to screen for and identify abuse. Providers will pilot these recommendations to determine their effectiveness. Following these pilots OPDV will create a report on the projects impacts as well as recommendations for future work.
