Advocacy Training and Statewide Network

Project Goal:
This project will build a transformative and lasting advocacy infrastructure for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) and their families. The Syracuse University Advocacy Training and Statewide Network will be a bold, inclusive initiative that will establish a comprehensive, sustainable, and culturally responsive framework for advocacy training, network-building, and real-world engagement. This project will equip self-advocates and families across all regions of New York State with the tools, connections, and confidence to communicate their perspectives, lead change, and drive equity.
Project Summary:
This project will develop a comprehensive advocacy training for people with developmental disabilities and their families. The training will have separate tracks for self-advocates and parents/family members/caregivers. Trainings will be developed and offered based on the needs of each cohort, incorporating previous experience in advocacy as well as topical areas of interest.
The project will also create a statewide advocacy network. The network will include other disability organizations across the state. The network will create and share tools, guides, and events, and develop a consistent advocacy agenda. There will be ongoing learning and advocacy opportunities for trainees as well as the broader community.
Key Activities:
- Establishment of self-advocate and parent/family member/caregiver-focused advocacy training tracks.
- Development self-advocacy trainings, with breakout sessions, for people with DD and family members. Sessions will include built-in opportunities to get to know other participants.
- Training sessions that reflect varying skill sets. Existing self-advocacy organizations will help teach specific content sessions.
- Training offered throughout each project year. Trainings in all regions of the state and in a blended format, with online and in-person options.
- Development of a comprehensive NYS advocacy network. Coordination of advocacy efforts with other organizations.
- Ongoing learning opportunities to practice advocacy skills.
- Registration, recruitment, program design and implementation.
- An external evaluator for all years of the project.
